sheer goodness

08-29-2http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif011
top and pants c/o Style by Marina, vintage belt, Karen Walker sunglasses, Jil Sander wedges

Whoops. I forgot to blog! I've been so overwhelmed with planning for New York and celebrating friends' birthdays that blogging was the last thing on my mind. I wore both of these Style by Marina pieces together when I got them in the mail... I guess this is as close as I'm going to get to owning a jumpsuit!

08-29-2011

It seems so surreal to me right now but in two days I'll be in New York! Suggestions and tips would be appreciated since I actually have no idea what I'll be doing. Seriously, I don't even know what I'm packing. It looks like it's going to be raining? I always end up underpacking because I hate lugging too much stuff around but in this case it may be more efficient to overpack... or maybe I'll just wear the same things over and over again like I usually do. Hah.

Here are some tips for when you move to the city:
1. Do not walk slowly. Ever.
2. Buy a metrocard and memorize the subway map. You should download one onto your phone.
3. Do not venture into Times Square. It's always crowded with annoying tourists. There's nothing there anyway.
4. The city is safer than you think.
5. Be prepared to see cat-sized rats in the subway and all the parks.
6. Enjoy living in the greatest city in the world.

I love your outfit, it looks amazing with that lighting.
I hope you have fun in NY!
The weather there is very fickle at times so be prepared by packing versatile pieces that you can layer.
Also, don't be offended if someone is rude to you on the subway and pushes you out of the way, it happens often.

I live in NYC-- it was definitely pouring all day today & it's supposed to rain all week :( ! Bring boots you don't mind getting wet (& that are still easy to walk in...streets can get a little slippery). It's been cooling off at night here too, so throw a pair of tights & a light jacket in your bag too, just in case. Hope you have a wonderful time!!

Nice shoes! Um, my suggestion is eat EVERYTHING. I spent august in nyc and literally ate my way through the city. Favorites would include the banana pudding at magnolia and the vietnamese sandwiches at num pang. And the tiny cupcakes I wrote about here:

I'll stop there, but seriously, the food was amazing. Have a great trip!

Some good shops to check out:
Bird
CB I Hate Perfume
Oak
Frye (new flagship store)
Rags-a-Gogo
There are tons of sample sales too, so check Daily Candy and Refinery29 for those...

Eat:
There are tons of izakaya type places so get some of those in (Yakitori Totto or Soba Totto are great), Ippudo is great for ramen but there's always a long wait. Terakawa is a great alternative, and Chuko just opened up in Prospect Heights (Brooklyn).
Do not eat in Little Italy. If you want good Italian food I love 'ino in the West Village or Bianca in the LES.
Pizza - I love Roberta's in Brooklyn (Bushwick) and they have a lot of other stuff on the menu too.
Try Chikalicious Dessert Bar. If they're full there's Chikalicious Puddin across the street.
Hit the Brooklyn Flea for food!
Some other great spots in Brooklyn: The Vanderbilt, Buttermilk Channel, Egg, Prime Meats, Blue Ribbon (also in Manhattan - several ones including Brasserie and Sushi)
Some great bars to try: PDT, Weather Up, Wilfie & Nell, The Dove Parlour
You have to try Shake Shack at Madison Square Park - get the Shack Burger and some fries (the best)

Sorry for the length of this, email me if you need anything else. Have a great trip!

AC said...

Oh oh oh. Cupcakes. Do NOT go to Magnolia. Their cupcakes are dry w/ too-sweet frosting. I like Sugar Sweet Sunshine in the LES. Baked has the best ones IMO but it's in Red Hook which is a pain to get to but once you're out there, there are a few cute shops (Saipua, etc) and restaurants (Fort Defiance, etc) to check out.

Brunch is a big deal too. Prune is great, also The Waverly (great greasy diner fare), Locanda Verde, The Dutch (expensive! but good), Ici (Brooklyn)... And I love Beer Table in Park Slope. Brunch is like 8 different waffles and dinner is $25 3-course prix fixe. EVERY DAY.

Annette said...

Hopstop.com is your friend! I use it every time I'm in NY and I always look up my route before I hit the streets so I can avoid looking like a tourist.

Go to Shake Shack for the Shack Stack. The fried mushroom stuffed with cheese will make it worth your while. And I love going to Stand in Union Sq just for the toasted marshmallow milkshake. I have no clue how the rest of the food is, but the milkshake!! Oh, the milkshake.

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but keep in mind that even though it'll be raining that it will probably be super humid/hot still! i had to learn the hard way. i HIGHLY recommend going to shake shack and ordering the burger with a deep fried portobello mushroom. SO GOOD. they have locations all over the city. there's also a tiny cuban restaurant in soho that is really good called cafe habana. they are popular for their elote. also be sure to try the halal from 53rd and 6th! it's a cart that i think starts serving at 4? the line get long pretty quickly but they stop serving at 3am i think. i really liked this dive bar called max fish. actually i really enjoyed all the bars in the lower east side. if you're into dive bars like me then youll probably enjoy hanging out there?? sorry for the long comment just don't want you to miss out on anything i enjoyed during my trip. have fun!
