closet challenge

acne printed t-shirt

So it looks like I may be moving to a much smaller place next month which means I have to get rid of most of my belongings. I'm trying really, really hard to condense my wardrobe especially since I know that I only wear about a 1/3 of it but it's so difficult to part with things when I'm so attached to them. I need to use these next two weeks to slowly purge my closet and figure out what works best in my closet. I didn't realize how draining this would be until I actually sat down and started sorting through everything. At one point I actually became really frustrated with myself for accumulating so much and had to step away for a couple minutes after realizing that I had a problem. Has anyone else ever experienced this? I'm expecting to feel cleansed (or some crap like that) at the end of this ordeal but right now I just feel overwhelmed.

I'm planning on donating most of it but since many people have been asking me about my shop I ended up making a Tumblr for these sales. I haven't put anything up yet but some cheap jeans (all below $20 shipped) and shirts should be up by tomorrow. My leftover silk shirts should be going up next week (it's going to take a lot more effort to let go of those since they're special to me) and I'll be parting with a couple sweaters as well.

My closet is a clutter, hate sorting everything too! After you are done, you'll feel much better :] Can't wait for the shop!

Oh no...closet purging's a bummer. :(
Best of luck in your new place!

I want to buy your entire wardrobe despite not having any closet space of my own.

Yes - I think I'm starting to get a real problem. And blog-land doesn't help.
I need to find other things to do instead of shop i.e. vist friends, draw, read, ANYHING ELSE. I was doing really well until I bought 2 dresses and a pair of shorts this week >.<
But last week I did get rid of 3 big garbage bags of stuff to charity.... so yeah.
Good luck!

A good rule to follow is to get rid of things that you haven't worn in 2 years. (I think the original rule was 2 seasons, but that's like a year, and that's just not long enough for me so I changed it to 2 years.) Also, get rid of all the clothes that you save, e.g. "One day when I lose 10 pounds, I'll wear these jeans." Clothing that comes with conditions aren't earning their keep.

Hope you love your new place even though it'll be smaller. Seriously it will feel better to get rid of some stuff. Good luck!

good for you! i recently did the same thing and it was so hard to put things in the "sell" bag. but you know what i don't even recall most of the stuff i put in there and i feel like i've got a little less crap lying around.

i hope you will feel the same way. :)

i get that feeling too; i'm forever broke so i'm on a perpetual 'cleansing' of my wardrobe & that alone makes me feel overwhelmed so i can just understand how it's like for you who hasn't cleared out yours in a long time. but that 'relieved & cleansed out' feeling does indeed come at the very end so persevere on! :)

yep, i've been there. i'm on a self-imposed shopping freeze for january and february, but i've already cheated. twice. my best tip? avoid temptation. don't go into stores, unsubscribe from enewsletters, etc. the only times i've cheated are the two times i've wandered into stores.

i'm also trying to get organized and sell some of my unworn clothes on ebay. i'm trying to focus on letting go, not getting more more more!

Haha cute photo. Hope the closet condensing isn't too stressful for you! :( I know how hard it must be, i try to keep my wardrobe clean and clear every season and yes, i am a massive hoarder of clothes.. hah. Looking forward to the shop though. Good luck! :)

Oh I did it too recently. It was such nightmare but soooo useful. I actually wrote a series of posts on the steps i used which might be useful to you. http://apair-andaspare.blogspot.com/2010/10/wardrobe-rehab-project-step-1-culling.html . I just had to force myself to be unsentimental about it. Would love to see the results! x

same here. instead of finally getting rid of all the stuff I don't wear, I buy new things.
Frustrating!
Good luck with it anyways! ;)

I'm moving too! It totally sucks! Not only have I gotten rid of half my clothes but I'm going through all random crap around the apartment. It's truly amazing how much stuff one person can accumulate. Good luck! I'm hoping it will feel much better once it's over...

That's horrible! I'm sort of trying to clean my room by organizing old notes and books and magazines and other paper things that have taken up a lot of space in closets and just around my room. So that I can better organize my clothes. Which is so pathetic. *sigh* Today, just an hour ago. I got really frustrated. 'Cause I've piled magazines and books and notes around my room, and my hair's too long even though I got it trimmed yesterday and just UGGHHH! Haha, Everything just seems to pile up and I need to step away and breathe, or listen to some music and try to zone everything out.
Goodluck with everything! It's going to be tough letting go of some of your stuff, but I think you will feel better/lighter once everything is done with and you've had the chance to catch your breath!

I konw that feeling :C and I need to do that too, but I really don't want to.

Agh I know exactly how hard that is. I have some things from three or four years ago that I convince myself I will find a need for but they just end up in laundry baskets because I don't want to deal with them! Hopefully, it will be for the best. Maybe you could even reward yourself for diligently working by saying something like "for every ten things I get rid of, I can get one thing I really love".
Best of luck!

I seriously have a major problem with this as well. Going back and forth from university and my hometown, I have a wardrobe-condensing breakdown every time... I wish you good luck!

Kacrates said...

I have this problem too, cleansing experience lol, you just feel like okay, my shit is gone, moving on. end of.

But selling them overtumblr means fans will take care of them. they'll go to a new home loved.

ack, i know how you feel! i had to part with a lot of stuff when I mived... even then i still i kept on shopping and swamped myself with clothes, i was hiding them around the flat, so gross.
Anyway, then I got rid of loads of stuff before Christmas and now I'm blogging about my one-in-one-out project. it's not as radical as some blog projects but it means everytime i get something new, i get rid of something old. means i'm a much more thoughtful shopper and saved me from buying tons of crap in the sales!

Jane said...

I have the same problem; I seriously only wear about a fifth of the clothes I own. Donating is a good idea, I'll probably do a big clean-up when I find time.

Good luck with moving!

i love your dinosaur pose :) at least, that's how i pose like a dinosaur. too cute :)

Lisa said...

don't worry too much about it, I thing that after you've sorted out everything you'll feel a lot better. and when you sell them you know that the clothes will have a 'new life'. and another plus: when I always look at the clothes I don't wear I feel so guilty... so you might feel better after you've sorted out everything :) good luck anyway!

i also have had to part with many of my clothing. it's hard in the beginning but also cleansing. it was nice knowing that i gave them to the salvation army, knowing other people will find it and wear it.

I know the feeling, I moved into a place without a closet and have to fit everything into a dresser so I do a lot of cleaning out of clothes.

I'm thinking of just building one.

it pains me to part with some things…but my closet is out of control. sometimes i don't know what to let go of. what is probably a good way to start, is to see if you have multiples of lots of things….like several pairs of ankle booties or leggings or whatever seems to reoccur…and then pair down to your favorites from there. good luck. I love your blog although i think it's my first time commenting! :)
